2014.06.22 – Stand up Paddle (SUP) Boarding – 1st Try

I have always wanted to try SUP and today while kayaking with Debbie 4 miles on Abel Reservoir this morning we met a couple who were doing it.  We admired their SUPs and they admired our Hobie and at the end of both of our trips, we found ourselves together at the launch ramp discussing SUPing.

Amy works for a guide company and asked if I wanted to try her board. At first I said no, but then 20 secs later I said “sure.” I first tried her partner’s board but due to the design, it was more difficult to get up on, so Amy had me try her board.

The first three attempts were all similar…start on your knees, paddle to get stability going, stand up, and keep paddling.  All three tires resulted in me launching the board while I fell off the back.  Each time I boosted back up on the board, Amy gave me a pointer.

Finally I had enough pointers under my belt and I quit shaking once I stood up and I was able to paddle forward standing up!  I decided to end my orientation on a  high note right then!

All good fun and I think we will take a lesson from the company now…and maybe get some office mates to join us!  it is harder than it looks until you get it down…  🙂

Amy offering useful tidbits starting on your knees

Start paddling to get stability going…

Stand up, start to shake side to side…

Start to tip…this is the last you will see of those sun glasses, they rest on the bottom now…

A broad smile as I fall for the 3rd time!

Splash!

Swim after the board!

I’ll try anything once… I want to try SUP more now though…  🙂
